We’re Off

We’re off to Grand Prairie today for our LONG drive with our baby in tow. Hopefully she will sleep for most of the way. It’s still warm and now it’s raining in Yellowknife this morning. Tim is working for half the day and Edzèa and I are going to Rhymes and Song time at the Centre for Northern Families.

Yesterday, at our Mom’s Group. I broke my cardinal rule because curiosity got the better of me. I had decided *not* to put Edzèa in to a Jolly Jumper as I’d been told/read bad things about them. Mainly, they are not good for the anatomical development of baby’s spine…but, there it was, staring at me at the Mom’s group. So, in to the Jolly Jumper she went. She just lolled about for a few minutes like a sack of potatoes and then when she figured it out-watch out! If there were a Jolly Jumper Olympics for infants, my daughter, bien sur, would win the gold! She LOVED the Jolly Jumper. She had a good solid 20 minutes of jumping fun and then I took her out. She got her one taste of candy and that’s it. I’m still not getting her one but it was hilarious to watch and for 20 minutes, she forgot to keep track of Mummy for a change!

We also tried her with peas and sweet potato yesterday. Not a hit. It could be because I chose the WRONG day to try. Her tooth has been bothering her and she just isn’t herself right now. Mummy got pulled out of Yoga yesterday as my little teether was not happy. I went from Downward Dog to Upward Running Mummy.

She likes apples though. She was sucking on my apple last night and got VERY angry when Daddy took her away for her bath.

Well, that’s all for now. Gotta run…get Tim to work, pack our stuff, go for song time and then off on our BIG road trip!!!

Oh and btw, the furnace guy just arrived for the umpteenth time. We’ve had countless problems with our furnace since we bought this house. We’ve replaced the boiler and had that break down numerous times and now the heat in our suite for our new tenants is awol. I’m telling you, it’s not fun to have your furnace break down at -40 C!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

My First Tooth

For those of you who haven’t heard yet…Edzèa has her first tooth coming up. It began to surface about a week ago and is still slowly ascending to it’s peak. Here are a few photos of it with her Mummy’s finger in her mouth. If you look REALLY hard, you’ll see it!! Seems that the teeth are genetic. I had my first tooth at 5 months too. Not sure about Tim.

Today someone called my baby chubby!!! We were at the movie theatre for the Moms and Babes movie matinee and as we were all introducing ourselves in the theatre, one couple asked me how old Edzèa was. When I said that she was 5 months old, they laughed and said that their daughter was 5 months too. They then said, “Wow, she’s big, what a chubby baby!”  Their daughter was the same weight as Edzèa at birth and weighs 13lbs at 5 months while Edzèa is almost 17lbs!

It turns out that their daughter was born 8 days after Edzèa at Stanton Hospital. When I mentioned that I was still in the hospital when their daughter was born they asked if my Mother had been there with me?  It seems that they had met her in the halls and remembered her as a very proud Grandmother who liked to sing. I said that must have been the right woman!

Great weather in Yellowknife for October. Record-breaking temperatures…could we be so lucky for it to last a few weeks longer???!!! I don’t want to jinx it but this is a great town when the skies are sunny and the snow hibernates. +12 C today and it has ranged from +10 to + 17C for the past two weeks. It’s a *real* fall for a change.

We are heading down to Grand Prairie for the Thanksgiving weekend to get a key cut for our car. LONG STORY!!! 10 hour drive each way so it should be nice in the lovely fall weather. We’re back on Sunday for Thanksgiving dinner with our friends Tracey & Markham.

Tracey’s a true Yellow Yellowknifer! I learn so much from her about the North. The other day she and I walked our girls on a walk through the boreal forest beside Great Slave Lake. She pointed out a few skeletons of houses that used to house the old miners when Con Mine (one of the Yellowknife mines) was in operation. She was lamenting that the city had torn the majority of them down for “environmental” reasons and was remembering her highschool Grad that was hosted in one of them. She’s a true Northerner. She has a daughter 3 months older than ours named Mackenzie Aurora. She’s named after the great Northern River.

Tracey and Markham go on fishing trips all of the time and bring back Lake Trout and Whitefish for us. I now have something that they want for a change!! I was given about 80 lbs of caribou meat that is sitting in my freezer in a rubbermaid tub waiting to be cut into useful pieces. We had Tracey,Markham & Mackenzie over for dinner last weekend and I made caribou stew and bannock. The bannock was delicious but the caribou stew was so-so. I need the recipe from my school as they make it perfectly!

Ok, gotta go and get some sleep…Yoga with daycare tomorrow. Tracey and I love it as the girls love the daycare at the gym that we go to and we LOVE the break!

Back at ya Fairy Godmother!

I had an interesting email from Edzèa’s Fairy Godmother shortly after she had read our first post on the blog the other day. It seems that she considers me transported to a galaxy far far away from her own.  Miss “I just had a spot on 30 Rock” the other day and my “acting” career is on fast forward feels that her best friend aka Mommy of Edzèa has disappeared into a world filled with diapers and Mommy’ism’s.  Here is an excerpt from her email to me:

Have I lost you to the otherside of mummydom, is your body officially had the
gravitational pull occur and are you orbiting around your baby?? Bahahahahaha!!!!?
If so, will you bevisiting this side of the fence occasionally? Or will I have to
start getting used to "my baby had the best solid poop out of all the babies in
my mommy group!"conversations.

I have to let you all know that little Miss Actress is a “teensy bit UNSELFAWARE”.  For anyone who knows this lovely person…I’m going to let you in on a little secret-although she doesn’t have any human children of her own; she has gargantuan maternal instincts and feelings for her feline offspring. She owns two Ragdoll cats called Boo and Lulu.

From my world of pet names for my child like Cutezilla, Kidlet, Pork Chop, Pumpkin etc. Miss Fancy Pants aka Fairy Godmother has many of her own pet names for her little kittens.

A few months ago I received a link to a video of her feline children which played an **ENTIRE** 10 minutes  of footage of two cats lazing about in every way and in every place imaginable in her lovely New York brownstone. This footage was like watching paint dry.

We went from two cats sleeping on the couch, to two cats sleeping in a basket to more sleeping and lazing around the house. Someone else commented to her that they had never seen such lazy cats in their lives! She posted this on YouTube. I will send the link in my next post for those of you who are interested.

She often calls me to tell me that Lulu or Boo plays hide and seek with her and she usually sends about 10 pictures every few months of their latest antics or lack thereof as the case may be.

So, as I forge ahead into my new role as “Mommy” I issue a challenge to Edzea’s Fairy Godmother and that is “I will stop the Mommy” talk when you stop the Crazy Cat Mommy stories/pictures.

That’s all for now…I’m off to Mommy & Baby movie matinee with Edzèa this afternoon…toodleooo!!!
