Edzèa is 5 Months Old Today!!

Happy 5 month birthday Edzèa! It’s hard to believe that our little lovebug has only been in our lives for 5 short months. It feels more like dog years to us!! She changes daily hence my burning need to write about it in this blog for fear that I will miss it and forget to tell her all about it one day. Thanks to Tim for my wonderful laptop with wireless internet.

Being a first-time Mom, my precious darling has a bit of a microscope on her but she doesn’t seem to mind. In fact, I believe it has a two-way lens. We are going through what I call Mombsession at the moment. This is where our daughter sees me and wails if I am not holding/looking/singing or generally doting on her at all times. Luckily, Daddy, also seems to have some rating so I do get some breaks.

Today, we went to school together, to teach a short pottery lesson to some local students at a school in Yellowknife which I’ve been doing since I went on mat leave. This particular school had heard about me through my friend/previous principal, Rita and lassoed me into doing some specialty classes with them.

Edzèa was perfectly fine in the Baby Bjorn with Mummy but the nice teacher whose class I’m teaching wanted to hold my little girl and take her away from her Mummy for a while so that Mummy could teach. Well, Edzèa let her know in no uncertain terms that this was ***%%$#unacceptable@@$$%^!!! so, she was quickly returned to teach with Mummy and promptly smiled at me upon her return to my arms.

Teaching clay with a “little helper” attached to your front is somewhat like trying to work with a baby lion in your arms. If they are sleeping they look so peaceful-great, if they are awake…??!!!!. At one point, it was a little noisy in class while I was trying to teach. I asked the students to please be quiet and listen to my next instruction. They were very good about this but as the room went silent and awaited my next words, Edzèa decided it was a good time to practice her fart-sounding raspberries. This had the whole class erupt in to giggles.

Note to self: in future, perhaps blowing raspberries could be a good ice-breaker as a new teaching strategy!

Her front left bottom tooth continues to emerge a little bit each day. Tim figures that her constant hydration at the trough is going straight back out through her drool by the sheer volume of it. Luckily, so far, she just likes to gnaw on fingers. I’m dreading the day that she decides to take a bite at Mummy. Youch!

We have a new routine with her which has gotten us back to full night sleeps. This includes a bath, a story and a lullaby before setting her into her crib. We have discovered that she has what I call “the Uncle Bruce” gene. Each night, my Mom (her Nana) used to take turns reading either mine or Bruce’s choice of books before bed each night. For Bruce’s night, he would, without fail, choose  Jack & the Beanstalk. It **never** changed. We got VERY sick of Jack & the Beanstalk. Well, I started Edzèa’s story routine with a lovely popular board book called Good Night Moon. I read it to her for a few nights and then decided to switch things up. The first time she fussed, I thought she was just overtired. The next few times…well, the minute I switch back to Goodnight Moon, happiness ensued and life was peaceful again.

Are 5 month old’s supposed to be this distinguishing???!!! I Love You Through and Through is also a wonderful story but it is not her bedtime story. She will accept any other story during the daytime hours but ONLY Goodnight Moon at bedtime. I’ve read that you can do a sign language version and we could also do it in French so I think we may have to resort to that at some point. For now, we are just going to alternate Mummy & Daddy reading it each night.

Above is her 5 month Birthday pic of her bedtime story with Daddy. G’night everyone!
